This week Clever Guy attended the Play Well Teknologies FUNdamentals of Engineering Summer camp. If you aren’t familiar with Play Well Teknologies, they offer engineering education courses for kids using LEGOS! He did this camp last year and he had a blast so we were pretty excited to be able to attend again. This course teaches kids how to build creations with LEGOS and they are able to bring their imagination to life with motors and gears.
Clever Guy learned how to make the the gears mesh and how to even make two gears at 90 degree angles work together to make movement. Of course these LEGO camps all revolve around FUN and creativity!
Here’s Clever Guy’s adventures at Engineering FUNdamentals using LEGOs
Day 1: A Catapult Car
Day 2: Merry-Go-Round & Tank
Of course Clever Vader was the tester on the Merry Go Round creation!
These creations were cool and of course Clever Guy loved making a tank.
Day 3: Gondola/Ski Lift
This day he built a gondola for a ski lift and he said it was his favorite.
Day 4: Battle Track
Clever Guy was excited that he got to fight the instructor’s Ender Dragon (from Minecraft). The wings actually go up and down so be sure to watch the video to see them in action! Instructor Tyler said it took 2 hours to build this.
Clever guy was in his element this week building with all of these LEGOS. After our week at the camp we were able to interview Instructor Tyler and he answered a few of our questions. While he has only been an instructor for about 6 months he did a great job at teaching the kids. He said the best part of his job was getting to see the kids imaginations transform into LEGO creations. Of course playing with LEGOS for your job is always a perk!
We found out that there are many other fun camps available based on fun subjects like Minecraft and Star Wars! We love both of those things so we will definitely be looking for upcoming camps.
One of the questions we had was can you buy these motors and gears? He shared with us that you can look online at sites like Amazon and look for these things:
- LEGO Gear Kit or LEGO Gears and Motors
- LEGO bricks with holes which are technically called “Technic” bricks/pieces. If you go to ebay buy a lot with different sizes so you don’t have to buy them separately.
If you want to sign your child up for these camps learn more here: play-well.org. You can find these camps all over the Phoenix area! We did this one at Estrella Mountain College and really enjoyed it. If you can’t find a camp that fits your schedule, consider one of their programs that happen during the school year or even for your child’s next birthday party!
If you aren’t in AZ don’t worry, there are many other states that offer these camps for kids!
Has your child participated in one of the Play Well Teknologies camps?
