This past weekend Clever Guy and I were invited to attend a Boy Scouts event to Build an Adventure. We haven’t done anything with the Boy Scouts before but I have been curious to know if this is something the Clever Guy would be interested in joining. I am always looking for new ways for him to be involved with groups that he will be interested in and grow with. Since he doesn’t care for sports, I have struggled with how to get him involved outdoors doing something he would love.
Before our adventure, we found out some more about BSA. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to try new things, provide service to others, build self-confidence and reinforce ethical standards. While various activities and youth groups teach basic skills and promote teamwork, Scouting goes beyond that and encourages youth to achieve a deeper appreciation for service to others in their community.
We had a LOT of fun during our experience with the Boy Scouts at the Grand Canyon Braves Pow Wow. He did archery and he was a pretty good shot!
He also did shooting with a BB Gun which of course he loved.
He built a flute out of PVC with a drill.
He even did some gold mining.
We learned about Native American living.
We experienced a lot on this day and we learned too. Not only did we learn about starting fires and the history of the Native Americans, we learned about gaining self confidence. He never once felt discouraged and I found him helping others throughout the day. When I asked Clever Guy at the end of the day what is favorite thing was, he said meeting new friends. I feel like this is something important for him while of course learning and having fun. As a mom, I really enjoyed watching him interact with other kids and do things on his own. It was almost like watching him grow up in front of me right there.
We really had a great experience thanks to the Boy Scouts. Everyone was kind and encouraging. We’ll definitely be looking into joining a chapter in our area.
