Have you ever shopped for furniture for kids? I’ll admit, I used to buy cheap furniture. Unfortunately, it doesn’t really last and kind of falls apart after a few shoves of clothes or placement of too many objects on top by kids. Of course, having a girl probably magnifies that a little bit and has been the story of the Clever Teen all of her life. On the other hand, buying nice furniture is really pricey. Even nice looking second hand furniture pieces like dressers can be a pretty penny. I found myself yet again with a broken dresser in the teen’s room and I needed a new dresser for her. Not something cheap, something that would last and of course fit her room.
I think I found that middle ground when I went thrift shopping a few months ago. I found this not so fabulous dresser and I knew that I had to have it for the Clever Teen. I think the co-parent thought I was nuts as it was kind of ugly. Now that I have dabbled in chalk paint a little bit, I figured out that even the ugliest of furniture pieces can get a whole new life with a simple paint makeover.
Can you believe this makeover only cost me around $1 total? It’s true. I found the purple and mint paint colors in the oops section at Home Depot. One of my happy places for sure.
For the paint, I did my version of chalk paint (pssst you can find that recipe here: http://cleverpinkpirate.com/2014/03/19/diy-chalk-paint-tint-recipe/)
How I created this makeover:
I removed the hardware and sanded it down. I then cleaned off all dirt and debris. Next I painted two coats of each color in the chalk paint mixture on each section of the dresser. After that I coated it in a clear wax and then reinstalled the hardware. I personally loved the hardware enough to just keep them on. It helped keep the cost of doing this down.
That’s it, really simple. Breathing new life into old kind of ugly furniture is actually pretty easy. If you are hesitant about making over furniture, start with a smaller piece before painting a bigger piece of furniture.
