If you read my post on orange peel cleaner, you know that I have gone through a lot of oranges lately. I have been looking for ways to use orange peels and I decided to dry some orange peels for their zest and turn that into a way to make things in the house smell better. I knew that the zest would combine well with the baking soda so my first thought was to make a deodorizer for the refrigerator. I used to keep baking soda boxes in my fridge but for some reason I stopped. The baking soda works as an odor absorber and helps keep the inside of the refrigerator smelling neutral. I then decided I could also use the orange peel deodorizer to make a carpet freshener and a quick deodorizer for the garbage disposal.
This recipe is really easy to make and all you really need are orange peels and baking soda. The first thing you’ll need to do is make the orange zest.
Orange Peel Deodorizer Recipe
To make orange zest:
- Place orange peels flat on a cookie sheet.
- Cook the orange peels on 175 for approximately 3 hours.
- Once dried, allow to cool.
- Pour the peels in a coffee grinder or food processor. Pulse until the peels are finely ground.
To make Orange Deodorizer for carpets, refrigerators etc
- Pour 2 cups of baking soda and ¼ cup of orange peel in a bowl. Mix well.
- Add the mixture to mason jars.
I made a refrigerator deodorizer in a mason jar with an open lid that I bought from PickYourPlum.com. I just placed it in the refrigerator to help absorb any odors.
To use as carpet deodorizer, simply sprinkle on the carpet before vacuuming. I would test it first to make sure the orange peel color won’t stain your carpet.
You can also pour a tablespoon of this deodorizer into the garbage disposal to help with odors.
