It’s not secret, I heart spray painting. I think it is the fastest way to finish a project and the coverage & versatility of spray paint makes my life that much easier. In this video I share my favorite basics on spray painting and making you projects successful and easy!
Be kind, I have been in a lot of pain lately and it took a lot of guts to make this *lol*
Spray Painting Tips
(A few things I left out of the video)
Tools:
Sand Blocks (available at any hardware store, less than $5)
Goggles and masks (available at dollar stores)
Primer Spray (Killz is at Walmart for less than $6, good for heavily stained items and Lowe’s as Rustoleum Fusion for less than $4)
Rags to wipe away dirt
Newspaper, tarps, drop cloths and masking tape to catch the over sprays (also available at dollar stores and hardware stores)
Sprays:
Always start with a primer spray, it will help with coverage
My favorite spray paint is Krylon Indoor/Outdoor (available at Walmart for less than $4 a can)
Krylon makes a dual spray paint which is paint and primer in one, it helps skip a step (available at Walmart for less than $5 a can)
Specialty paints are available for different textures and project types, be sure to read the directions on the can thoroughly.
Acrylic sprays are great to preserve the painted projects to prevent scratching. Krylon makes a triple glaze & Mod Podge makes an acrylic spray, available in the craft aisle (available at Walmart for $5 – $6)
Tips:
- Be sure to sand and wipe away any fibers or dirt before painting. You should always have a smooth surface, textured imperfections will show.
- Always shake the can vigorously for approx 1-2 minutes before painting. This will mix up the paint and help with continuous spraying.
- Spray continuously, do not stop on the project, spraying approx 10 inches away.
- Allow the paint to dry completely before adding coats or moving on to a sealant.
